What is DHT and why is it associated with thinning hair?

DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, is an androgen hormone made when the body converts testosterone using an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. DHT has several normal roles in the body, but it is also closely associated with pattern hair loss, particularly in people whose hair follicles are genetically sensitive to its effects.

Not every hair follicle responds to DHT in the same way. In people who are predisposed to androgenetic hair loss, certain follicles — commonly around the hairline, temples or crown in men, and through the central part in women — can become increasingly sensitive to androgen activity over time.

This can lead to a gradual process known as follicle miniaturisation. With each hair-growth cycle, affected follicles may produce finer, shorter and less visible hairs.
